RRAS Field Trip Schedule: Fall 2011

September 10th, Saturday – Mount Charleston

Meet at McDonald’s at the corner of US95, Durango, and Farm Roads.  We will car pool up the mountain.  Wear comfortable shoes, bring water and snacks.  Leader: Christiana Manville, for reservations please call 702-672-1411.  7:00 am – ? rednapedsapsucker

September 17th, Saturday – Corn Creek Field Station, DNWR

Meet at the Corn Creek.  Wear comfortable shoes, bring water and snacks. Leader: Tracy Kipke, for reservations please call 702-290-8556.  7:00 am -  ?

September 22nd, Thursday – Tule Springs / Floyd Lamb Park

Good for beginners and seniors.  Easy walking.  Bring lunch, snacks and water.  FEE AREA $6.00 per car.  Leader: Rita Schlageter, for reservations and meeting please call 702-382-3327.  8:00 am – Noon

September 24th, Saturday – Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve

Come see all the improvement that have been made at the Preserve.  Shore bird migration should be good.  Easy walking, wear comfortable shoes, bring water, sunscreen, and hat.  Leader: Je Anne Branca, for reservations please call 702-451-6843.  7:00 am – 9:00 am

Birds of Mount Charleston: Apr 4th, 2011

The Red Rock Audubon Society will host a power-point presentation on the wonderful birds of the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area on Monday, April 4, 2011, at the Mount Charleston Library, beginning at 6:30 PM.  The community is invited to attend.

The Spring Mountains tower over 10,000 feet above the Las Vegas Valley and provide habitat for over 226 bird species.  As we journey up the mountain to the high peaks, we will be reviewing the various plant habitat at the different altitudes and see the birds that live in each community.  The Spring Mountains have been designated by the National Audubon Society as an Important Bird Area.

Each person attending will receive a full color birding brochure (see picture) recently produced by a grant from the Mt. Charleston license plate funding. Soda and popcorn will be served.  Come and enjoy the evening event with your family.

Spring Mountains Spring Cleaning: May 7th, 2011

Spring Cleaning:  May 7, 2011

Every winter thousands of people visit the Kyle and Lee Canyon areas of the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area to play in the snow.  In May, as the snow melts and colorful wildflowers begin popping up along with unsightly litter.  This is the time for Spring Cleaning.

Join us on Saturday, May 7, from 10 am – 1 pm as we prepare the mountains for all of the visitors who will come up in the summer to enjoy the mountains and escape the hot weather.  Last year over 300 volunteers picked up cans, bottles, plastic bags, an abandoned car muffler, a dolly and a few tires that were among the 3200 pounds of debris removed.

At 1 pm, following the litter pick up, participants will join together to celebrate spring in the mountains with a barbeque, an education expo and live music.

Field Trip: Sept. 25th, 2010 – Mt. Charleston with Christiana Manville

September 25th, 2010: Saturday 7:00 am – Noon

Please come join us in the beautiful Mt. Charleston area for two short, moderately strenuous, hikes and birding.  Bring snacks, water, and lunch. Wear hiking boots or sturdy shoes. We will meet in the McDonald’s parking lot off of US 95 at Durango & Farm Road (SE corner) at 7:00 am.

Christiana is a wildlife biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program, where she assists private landowners with restoration of wildlife habitat on their property. She has worked in the Las Vegas area for several years and lived on Mount Charleston for over three years.

March 8th: Birds in the Spring Mountains

Christiana Manville will talk about birds in the Spring Mountains on March 8, 2010.  The Spring Mountains tower over 9,000 feet above the Las Vegas Valley and provide habitat for over 226 species of birds.  We will journey up the mountain to the high peaks, looking at the different plant communities and the birds that live in each community.  The Spring Mountains have been designated by the National Audubon Society as an Important Bird Area.

All Red Rock Audubon Society meetings are FREE and open to the public – COME JOIN US!  Education of both members and the public on ecology and environmental issues is a major goal of  Audubon chapters.  At our monthly meetings we provide education and interesting programs on topics related to birds and conservation.

When: The 2nd Monday of every month.  We do not meet in Jun, Jul, Aug, and Dec.
Social time begins at 6:30pm. Programs/presentations begin at 7:00pm.

Where: Nevada Power Building, 6226 W. Sahara Ave, Las Vegas, NV -  in the Wengert Room.
1 block west of Jones, on the north side of the street.  Enter on Steve Rigazio Court (west side of Nevada Power) and park in the north lot.  The room entrance is located slightly north west of the drive up windows.

Thurs, Sept. 3rd

  • 10:00 AM – Robber’s Roost Interpretive Walk.  Meet Ricky at the Robber’s Roost Parking Lot.
  • 1:00 PM – Flowers Beyond the Petals.  Meet Ricky at the entrance to McWilliams Campground.
  • 4:00 PM – Endemic Explorations!  Meet Ricky at the Upper Bristlecone Trailhead.

Fri, Sept. 4th

  • 1:00 PM – Making and breaking mountains!  Meet Ricky at the hilltop Campground Host Site.
  • 3:00 PM – Insects and other invertebrates of the Spring Mountains.  Meet Ricky at the Host Site at Hilltop Campground.
  • 8:30 PM – Night Hike at Hilltop Campground.  Meet at host site.

Sat, Sept. 5th

  • 10:00 AM – Meet Ricky for a Microhike at Upper Lee Meadows.
  • 1:00 PM – Be a Junior Ranger!  Meet Ricky at the entrance to Old Mill Campground.
  • 3:00 PM – Animal mysteries – solve the clues the animals leave behind.  Meet Ricky at the entrance to Old Mill Campground.
  • 8:30 PM – Night Hike through Lower Lee Meadows. Meet Ricky at the entrance to Old Mill Campground.

Sun, Sept. 6th

  • 10:00 AM – Trees identification and fun facts.  Meet Ricky at the Mary Jane Falls Trailhead.
  • 1:00 PM – Travel From Mexico to Alaska all within the Cathedral Rock Picnic Area!  Meet Ricky at the entrance to the picnic Area.
  • 3:00 PM – What’s Up with the weather?  Meet Ricky at the entrance to Cathedral Picnic Area and learn how and why we measure the weather.

Wed, Aug. 19th

  • 10 AM—Wednesday walk with Ricky. Meet at the Fletcher Canyon Trailhead.
  • 1 PM—There is more than just water in those washes. Meet Ricky at the Visitor Center.

Thurs, Aug. 20th

  • 1 PM—Meet Ricky at the Robber’s Roost trail parking lot and see what secrets the cave may still hold.
  • 4 PM—Get up close and personal with the flowers and trees in Fletcher Canyon. Meet Ricky at the trailhead.

Saturday, Aug. 22nd

  • 8:30 AM—Explore the Lower Lee Meadows with Tricia.
  • 10 AM to 2 PM—Making a difference. Naturalists will be in Cathedral Rock Picnic Area talking about all the good and bad ways we can leave a mark on the land.
  • 4 PM—Explore your area. Join Tricia for an interpretive walk through Cathedral Rock Picnic area and up to Little Falls. Look closely at what you walk by every day.

Sunday, Aug 23rd

  • 1 PM—Meet Ricky at the Visitor Center and learn why there are so many species found in the Spring Mountains that exist no where else in the world.
  • 4 PM—Sift through the past and see what clues you can find. Meet Ricky at the Visitor Center.
  • 8:30 PM—Night walk through Upper Lee Meadows with Ricky.

Spring Mountains Program Schedule for Week 7/20

Schedule of programs presented by the US Forest Service during the week of July 20, 2009 for Spring Mountains & Mt. Charleston area.

All Programs, including walks, are all about an hour long. Hikes will vary depending on length. All ages are welcome and encouraged. Children must have an accompanying adult.
