The RRAS is the Southern Nevada chapter of the National Audubon Society.
The mission of Red Rock Audubon Society is to protect, restore, and improve natural ecosystems, focusing on birds and other wildlife, and to educate the public about our unique Nevada environment.
 
 

GENERAL MEETINGS

General Meetings will be held at 7:00 pm on the 2nd Monday of every month (except June, July, August, and December).  Meetings are held at the Nevada Power Building, in the Wengert Room, at 6226 W Sahara Ave (1 block west of Jones, on the north side of the street).  Enter on Steve Rigazio Court (west side of Nevada Power) and park in the north lot.  The room entrance is located slightly north west of the drive up windows.  Social hour begins at 6:30pm.

BOARD MEETINGS

Board Meetings are held the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm.  Meetings are held at Pam's office (Direct Access Lending, 650 White Drive, Suite 200, LV, 89119).  Any Audubon members interested in attending should first contact a board member listed in the newsletter or the Officers listed on this website.  Your input is needed and always welcomed, so please join us!

MONTHLY RAFFLE

Tickets are one for $1 or six for $5.  Besides providing important information and wonderful camaraderie at our monthly general meetings, we also raffle off great prizes as a fund raiser.  Come join in on the fun!  Also, if you have anything you would like to donate for the raffle, you may do so at the monthly meeting or email Pam Nickels.  Be sure to come early and enjoy the refreshments while chatting with fellow birders.  Social hour begins at 6:30.

May 12th, 2008 - "Annual Potluck Dinner"

April 14th, 2008 - "Changes to Desert National Wildlife Refuge"

  • Amy Sprunger, Desert National Wildlife Refuge Manager.  Ms. Sprunger will discuss upcoming projects on the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. These include major modifications to Corn Creek. The current plans will remove the man-made ponds and create a wetland area in the horse pasture west of the existing Visitor Center. A new Visitor Center will be constructed as well.

March 10th, 2008 - "Bird Research Activities in Central Eastern Nevada by SNWA"

  • Zane Marshall, SNWA Environmental Division Manager.  Mr. Marshall will give a brief overview of the In-State Water Project and the related Federal Stipulation Agreements to monitor the environment.  The talk will then concentrate on the Raptor and Sage Grouse Surveys that SNWA has been performing recently.

Feb 11th, 2008 - Wetlands Park: Take a Walk on the Wild Side of Clark County

  • Christie Leavitt, Curator of Education for the Clark County Wetlands Park, will discuss plans for current facilities and future expansion of the Nature Preserve and the Wetlands area.

Jan 14th, 2008 - Burrowing Owl Project

  • Dorothy Crowe, from the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, will discuss results and progress from an ongoing study
    conducted on the Burrowing Owl population within the LMNRA.  The results will be a nice compliment to our own Urban Burrowing Owl project.

Nov 28, 2007 (Note special date - this is the 4th Wednesday) - Alaskan Natural Treasures

  • Presented by Taldi Walters, Alaska Field Coordinator for the National Audubon Society.  Ms. Walters will discuss opportunities to protect these magnificent places for current and future generations.  The Tongass National Forest, Chugach National Forest, and National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska.

Oct 17, 2007 - Ecology and Conservation of Amargosa Valley and River System

  • Presented by Brian Brown, manager of China Ranch Date Farm.  Mr. Brown will present an overview of the ecology and conservation efforts in this region.  By attending this meeting you'll learn about this beautiful area and view conservation efforts in the state.

Sept 19, 2007 - Urban Burrowing Owl Project

  • Presented by Christiana Manville of the US Fish and Wildlife Service.  Ms. Manville will discuss the new program for locating and monitoring Burrowing Owls, and their nesting sites, in the Las Vegas valley.  Volunteer opportunities are available for this project.  Read more here.
