More new bird species have been discovered there in the last few decades than any other country. Today, ornithologists are still struggling to unravel this diversity as new forms are discovered and previously unknown relationships come to light. One of these is the Scarlet-banded Barbet, discovered only in 1996 and described in 2000 by ornithologists from Louisiana State University. RRAS - West Branch, Pahrump On January 23rd, 2012, Dorothy Crowe (USGS) and Christiana Manville (USFWS) will present on Burrowing Owls. Dorothy and Christiana both have extensive experience monitoring Burrowing Owls in Nevada. We will also be starting Burrowing Owl monitoring survey in the spring. Interested volunteers may sign-up at the meeting. Social hour begins at 6:00 pm, with the general meeting beginning at 6:30 pm. Meet at the Cooperative Extension, 1651 E. Calvada Blvd, Pahrump, NV. Help Needed with Burrowing Owl Projects in 2012!
Submitted by: Christiana Manville, USFWS The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service needs volunteers to monitor burrowing owl artificial burrows at Floyd Lamb Park and Nellis Air Force Base in the Las Vegas Valley. Volunteer nest monitors must live close to these locations as this is a large time commitment. Monitors will visit their burrows once a week between April 1 and August 1, for a for a half hour observation period during which time the monitor will count the number of owls, document the weather conditions, and record behaviors of the owls on a data sheet. The observation period must occur in one of the following periods: 1) 15 minutes before to 45 minutes after sunrise or 2) … Read More
