February 13, 2012: Exploring Bird Diversity in Peru with Matt Denton

RRAS Las Vegas: “Exploring Bird Diversity in Peru” with Matt Denton

matt_denton3

Peru is a famous place among birders, and rightly so.  More new bird species have been discovered there in the last few decades than any other country.  Today, ornithologists are still struggling to unravel this diversity as new forms are discovered and previously unknown relationships come to light. One of these is the Scarlet-banded Barbet, discovered only in 1996 and described in 2000 by ornithologists from Louisiana State University.  This spectacularly plumaged bird is still known only from a single peak which had never been explored due to its remoteness at the edge of the Peruvian Amazon.  Matt has recently returned from Peru where he made the hike up Cerro Cinco Puntos to see the barbet successfully.

Matt Denton spent nearly a decade in Latin America studying birds as an undergraduate student, bird biologist, and guide.  Now he returns each year to Central and South America leading bird tours for Birdquest.  Matt’s varied birding career includes leading field projects studying tropical bird ecology; monitoring rare macaws in remote Northeast Brazil; and training guides in the Peruvian rainforest.

Floyd Lamb/Tule Springs Bird Walk Schedule 2012

RRAS will lead bird walks at Tule Springs / Floyd Lamb Park the third Saturday of each month, corresponding with the Floyd Lamb Park Farmer’s Market (10am to 2pm). Entrance to the park is free the day of the Farmer’s Market.

Floyd Lamb Park is home to a variety of native and migratory birds.  The lakes attract water birds and the native riparian and desert wash vegetation attracts many Mojave desert species.  The walk finishes with a visit with the Park’s burrowing owls.  Walks last about 2 hours and are geared toward beginners and casual walkers.  There will be lots of walking along dirt trails and paths.

Rest rooms are available at the park.  Bring water, snacks, and a friend.  Meet at the parking lot for Group Picnic Area 5 at the end of the paved road, past the Nevada Division of Forestry Plant Nursery.

8am – 10am for the following dates:  February 18, March 17, April 21, May 19, September 15, October 20, November 17, and December 15.

7am – 9am for the following dates:  June 16, July 21, and August 18.

Help Needed with Burrowing Owl Projects in 2012!

Submitted by: Christiana Manville, USFWS

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service needs volunteers to monitor burrowing owl artificial burrows at Floyd Lamb Park and Nellis Air Force Base in the Las Vegas Valley. burowl1

Volunteer nest monitors must live close to these locations as this is a large time commitment. Monitors will visit their burrows once a week between April 1 and August 1, for a for a half hour observation period during which time the monitor will count the number of owls, document the weather conditions, and record behaviors of the owls on a data sheet. The observation period must occur in one of the following periods: 1) 15 minutes before to 45 minutes after sunrise or 2) 45 minutes before to 15 minutes after sunset. When juvenile owls are 21 to 28 days old, three visits will be required in a week since this is the time than young owls are most easily counted.
burowl3 One volunteer from last year made a great You Tube video of her owl family. To see the video go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4DuQJUrytc If you want to participate or get more information please contact Harry Konwin at 515-5494 or Harry_Konwin@fws.gov.

The West Branch of the Red Rock Audubon Society (RRAS) is looking for volunteers to monitor burrowing owl nest burrows in the Pahrump Valley. See above for a description of nest burrow monitoring. If you want to participate or get more information please contact Richard Cantino at 775-727-0645 or richardcantino@att.net. burowl2

We will be starting the next phase of the Floyd Lamb Park Burrowing Owl Habitat Enhancement Project, a joint RRAS and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service project. In April or May we will be installing 18 new artificial burrows in the new environmental enhancement area of the park. We will probably have several Saturday work days when we will be installing the burrows. This work may include moving rocks, putting the parts of the artificial burrow together and filling in soil around the burrows with shovels and rakes. If you are interested in helping out please contact Harry Konwin at 515-5494 or Harry_Konwin@fws.gov.

Nevada Christmas Bird Counts

It’s that time of year again!  The annual Christmas Bird Counts are fast approaching and YOU are invited to join.  You don’t need to be an expert birder to participate – you just have to be able to help spot birds, count, check a field guide, etc. wreath2

Each of the citizen scientists who annually braves snow, wind, or rain, to take part in the Christmas Bird Count makes an enormous contribution to conservation.  Audubon and other organizations use data collected in this longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations – and to help guide conservation action.

There will be a fee of $5 for each person per Bird Count that you participate in to cover the cost of compiling data and printing your name in the next CBC issue of American Birds.  Reservations are required so we can plan ahead to cover the CBC areas properly.  Contact the Leader for reservations or if you have any questions.

Bring food & snacks, water, wear layered clothing, and bring extra clothes to keep warm.  Please take pictures and please send us a write-up of your day for our website & newsletter!

Mine Claim Marker Pull-Out Event: 11/05/2011

Submitted by: Bob Wilkin

November 5th, Red Rock Audubon Society will celebrate the passage of the new law SB 108,  that makes PVC pipes illegal on mine claims, by pulling them out of the ground!  These PVC pipes are responsible for thousands of bird deaths every year!!

WE NEED AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE TO COME OUT, spend the day, a half day, or as much time as you can to help with this project.  There will be press coverage of the event so that we can focus attention on the mine claim marker issue to let everyone in Nevada know that after Nov. 1, PULL BABY PULL!

All mine claim markers that are hollow and trap our state’s birds can be pulled out of the ground and laid down (we can remove them from the landscape altogether if the claim is not active).  Christy Klinger (NDOW) will accompany us so that we know which ones are active claims and which ones are not.

We will meet at the west side of the Silverton Casino Parking lot at 8:00 am, and then we will be driving/car-pooling to Pahrump. We will meet the members of the West Branch of RRAS at 9:30am by the NUGGET sign on NV160 at the Junction with NV372 (second stop light in Pahrump).  From there we will be heading out to Crystal, NV to pull the claim markers!

If you can come out and help with this event, please let me know you are coming so we know how many people plan to help.  Contact president@redrockaudubon.org

REMEMBER:
•         Dress appropriately and wear comfortable hiking shoes.  Participants can hike as much or little as they want, but all travel will be done on foot.
•         Bring water and lunch/snacks
•         Bring Binoculars!  Not for bird-watching, but to assist in finding the mine claim markers
•         Bring a shovel and/or pick or Pulaski.  Depending on the project area/soil, some posts may require a shovel to loosen the surrounding soil for easier removal.
•         Gloves, for sifting through contents of the posts (sometimes there are spiders, etc)

This is a one-time event, so do not miss it!  Innocent birds killed by mining claim marker pipes
