Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve

Ted Cassidy – Field Trip Leader

A half dozen birders met out at the Henderson Bird Preserve for a great day of birding. Even before the walk started we were chasing birds in the parking lot. We saw a total of 65 species.

The highlights were Lark Sparrow, Yellow-breasted Chat, Yellowthroat and Red-eyed Vireo. We found a single Red-necked Phalarope feeding with a large flock of Wilson’s Phalarope. Another special bird was the White-winged Dove that flew over our heads. A very cooperative Sora walked right by our feet.

We enjoyed looking at all three teal: Green-winged, Cinnamon, and Blue-winged. Other ducks were Redhead, Lesser Scaup, Wood Duck, Gadwall and a Pintail was still hanging around. Bonaparte’s Gulls were at the preserve, too.

Spring is a wonderful time at the Preserve with many of the winter residents still around along with the migrants. Be sure to make it out on our next trip!!
